Life Is Not Linear: Embracing Flexibility in Everyday Planning

We all know the drill—plan your day, your week, or even your year, and everything will fall perfectly into place. Right? Not quite. Life has a wonderful way of throwing us curveballs, and that's okay.

The thing to remember with planning is that it’s not about creating a rigid schedule but in getting a draft version in place of what you want and how you think it you might be able to do it – allowing for flexibility, reflection, and amends along the way.

Here's how to do just that:

✔Planning Is Key, But It’s Not Everything – controversial but realistic! Taking time to plan can set you up for success. It provides clarity, structure, and a sense of direction. But, remember that plans are not set in stone. They’re like a template, an outline for things, so you can tweak and adjust as needed. Accepting this mindset makes it easier to adapt when things don’t go exactly as expected.

✔Allow Time for Review and Adjustments – pause and reflect. Plans should be a work in progress. Allow for time to review what’s working and what’s not. Maybe that early morning run isn’t happening, or the midweek family dinner is too chaotic. Adjust your plans with compassion for yourself and those around you. Embracing this approach turns disruptions into opportunities to recalibrate.

✔Learn from Mistakes Along the Way – it happens.

Life’s surprises are often our greatest teachers – according to the fortune cookie my son got at Chinese New Year. When a plan goes wrong, don’t dwell on it as that will often cause things to come to a halt entirely. Instead, think about why and if you need to make a tweak. Did you overcommit? Were expectations too high? Recognising these patterns will not only help you to plan better and with more kindness next time but also be aware of habits that you have that are not serving you in the best way.

In the end, planning is about creating space for what matters most—whether that’s time with loved ones, your own goals, or simply enjoying the moment. Embrace the twists and turns, knowing they’re part of the journey. After all, the road to a fulfilling life is rarely a straight line.
